MY ITALIAN PARADISE

I fell in love with Tuscany many years ago – the gently undulating landscape, the way of life, the wonderful people and of course the delicious food all create a magical feeling and an atmosphere that’s utterly seductive.

THE PERFECT HOTEL

Hotels should make you feel special, as though they want to look after you and do so with style. Kit Kemp at Firmdale seems to manage this effortlessly – her hotels exude charm and personality, and you’ll find style and smiling service whether you’re in NYC or London.

MY GO-TO OUTFIT

I travel a lot, so I’ve refined the art of packing light. I wear a lot of clothes by the brand Dosa as they suit most climates and you can easily layer up or down. I trawl the rails at Mouki Mou in Chiltern Street for new pieces.

ALWAYS IN MY SUITCASE

Scent is always important and I take a Designers Guild scented candle for my hotel room every time I travel.

OUR AL FRESCO FEASTS

In summer we have friends and family to stay at our house in Umbria. We delight in the simple pleasures of life – food from the garden and al fresco lunches that go on for hours. It’s relaxing, yet stimulating at the same time.

MY ONLY MUST

Hotel rooms without personality are one of my biggest bugbears. I was once shown a room that was decorated in shades of chocolate brown. It was so dark I had to check out immediately.

CHILDHOOD ROAD TRIPS

We had wonderful holidays as a family. My parents were very adventurous and we would tour Europe every summer, packing up the car and travelling through either Italy or France. They never booked ahead so we were always discovering new places. No two days were ever the same.

A SPOT OF SHOPPING

Pecorino, olive oil and handmade soaps always accompany me home from Italy. In France I often visit the brocantes where I might find antique glass and vintage linens.

COLOUR ME HAPPY

I’m always amazed by the sights and sounds of India, and the Indians’ sense of colour and tradition. The markets in Jodhpur and Jaipur are wonderful places to spend an afternoon and the coloured tiles in the temple at Dungarpur in Rajasthan are unforgettable.
